Fe550D provides a higher specified yield-strength class, while Fe500D offers a different balance of strength and ductility. Both are ductile grades under IS 1786. The structural engineer must select the grade, and procurement should follow the approved bar-bending schedule and project specification.
Start with the structural requirement
TMT grade selection is a design decision. The engineer considers loads, member size, reinforcement congestion, seismic detailing, concrete grade and the applicable drawings before specifying the steel. A procurement team should therefore compare offers against the approved grade, diameter mix and standard—not replace one grade with another only because it is available or carries a higher strength designation.
Rungta Steel TMT Bars are available through SSS Builds in Fe500, Fe500D, Fe550 and Fe550D grades, subject to the required size mix and supply location.
What the grade name tells you
The number in Fe500D or Fe550D identifies the minimum yield-strength class specified for the product. The letter D denotes enhanced ductility requirements compared with the corresponding non-D grade. Ductility matters because reinforcement must deform in a controlled way rather than fail suddenly, particularly where seismic detailing or demanding structural behaviour is involved.
A higher strength class can help a designer optimise reinforcement in some situations, but it does not automatically make that grade the correct choice for every member or every project.
Compare more than yield strength
A sound comparison checks the complete test certificate and project specification. Important items include yield strength, tensile strength, elongation, the ratio between tensile and yield strength, bend and rebend performance, chemical composition, weldability and dimensional tolerance. The applicable edition of IS 1786 and any project-specific acceptance criteria should control the review.
Traceability also matters. Confirm the manufacturer, heat or batch identification, bar markings, test certificate, diameter and quantity before accepting a delivery.
A practical procurement checklist
Send the supplier the exact grade, diameter-wise quantity, straight-length or bend requirement, delivery destination and desired dispatch schedule. Ask for the commercial basis—ex-plant or delivered—and clarify unloading, weighment and testing expectations before dispatch.
For project supply, keep the purchase order, approved specification, manufacturer test certificate, weighment record and delivery documents aligned. This reduces ambiguity when material reaches the site.
When should Fe550D be considered?
Fe550D may be considered when the structural design specifically uses that strength class and the detailing, lap lengths, anchorage and member design have been prepared accordingly. Fe500D remains widely specified where the design calls for its particular strength-and-ductility balance.
The safe rule is simple: procure the grade shown in the approved structural documents. If a change is proposed, obtain written clearance from the structural consultant before supply or use.

Direct answers
Is Fe550D always better than Fe500D?
No. Fe550D belongs to a higher yield-strength class, but the correct grade depends on the structural design, detailing and project specification.
What does the D mean in a TMT grade?
D identifies a ductile grade with enhanced ductility requirements compared with the corresponding non-D grade under the applicable standard.
Can a contractor replace Fe500D with Fe550D at site?
A grade change should not be made informally. It should be reviewed and approved in writing by the structural engineer because design and detailing are grade-specific.
What information is needed for a TMT quotation?
Share the grade, diameter-wise quantity, delivery destination, required schedule and whether the requirement is for straight-length or bend material.
